  • Injection Removal FAQs: All You Need To Know:

    07 Apr 14

Seized fuel injectors are a common problem and removal can often be surprisingly tricky, and if things go wrong, end up being costly. Here are some of our clients’ most frequently asked questions about the hazards of blocked fuel injectors:

Injector Removal

Injector Removal Service Birmingham

Not so long ago, fuel injectors were only found on diesel fuelled engines. Cars that burned petrol usually had a carburettor to get the right mix of petroleum and air gas, which was then fired in each cylinder by a spark plug. This system can still be found in use, but increasingly, petrol fuelled cars are being manufactured with a fuel injection system.

The carburettor has served its purpose well, but it isn't overly efficient. Fitting twin carburettors increases the efficiency, but tuning them to synchronise properly is not easy. A much better solution is a fuel injection system, which provides more power, more efficiency, greater economy and cleaner emissions.

When to Seek Injector Removal

Most of the time fuel injectors work just fine, but like most engine components, they can encounter problems that need attention. Generally, the fuel injector will need to be removed and cleaned, or replaced. There are a number of excellent garages that offer injector removal services as well as MOT and servicing in Birmingham. They can check the integrity of fuel injectors with a multi meter or ohmmeter without removing the injector. Injector removal is a fairly easy task for a trained operator in any fuel injector removal service.

Fuel injectors can need replacing for a number of possible reasons. If the injector develops a restriction of as little as 10% of flow, it can start to misfire. On the other hand, not enough resistance, caused by an internal solenoid short, can also cause problems. If a driver experiences a decrease in engine power, with an increase in fuel consumption, it's likely that one or more of the injectors need to be replaced. If there is a strong smell of fuel all the time in a car, then the injector could be leaking, and will need to be replaced. There are of course other possible reasons for injector removal and replacement.

Generally speaking, fuel injectors and diesel injectors last quite a long time, but they rarely last throughout the life of a car, although some of today's high-end cars are fitted with injectors by manufacturers who claim they will last the life of the car. The air that is brought in to an engine can be polluted, and the fuel can be contaminated with grit, dirt particles or water. All this will have an effect on the life of the fuel injectors, determining when they will need to be replaced. If an engine starts to lack power, or it sounds rough when idling, it's probably time to have the injectors checked out, and replaced if necessary.
